Amgen lays groundwork for new R&D center in Hyderabad

Amgen is expanding its footprint in India with an R&D center in Hyderabad, the latest effort from the California company to boost its research facilities.

The new Science and Innovation Center is set to open in Hyderabad’s Genome Valley, a biopharma business park, in 2027, an Amgen spokesperson told Fierce in a statement. It will join Amgen’s network of R&D sites, the spokesperson said, “which consists of seven research laboratories in the U.S. and abroad.”

The new center “will bring together scientists and technologists across discovery chemistry, drug metabolism and pharmacokinetics and precision medicine,” the spokesperson added.

Amgen did not respond to questions from Fierce about the cost of the Genome Valley investment.

“The new center in Genome Valley expands the way we integrate experimental science with data and technology across our global research capabilities and complements our strong U.S.-based Research and Development footprint,” Jay Bradner, M.D., Amgen’s executive vice president of R&D, artificial intelligence and data, said in a statement. “By connecting these capabilities, we can learn faster and translate those insights into innovative medicines for patients.”

The new Indian venture follows further R&D investments Amgen has made domestically, including a similar center at the company’s Thousand Oaks headquarters that will cost $600 million and a $125 million expansion at its South San Francisco location.

The new Indian research center sits about an hour away from Amgen’s India offices in HITEC City, another business district in Hyderabad.

By setting up camp in Genome Valley, Amgen will be surrounded by many familiar faces. Numerous other global pharmas, like Eli Lilly and Novartis, have secured space in the growing hub. Genome Valley got its start as the site of Bharat Biotech, best known as the first company to produce a homegrown Indian COVID-19 vaccine.
